Can I substitute Himalayan salt or does it need to be sea salt?

In reply to Dana. They make a dishwasher salt that is recommended by Bosch. I have one too and switched to that salt.

This works well for most of my dishes. The only problem I notice was coffee film/rings inside my mugs don’t come off. I’m wondering if I should tweak the recipe to add a bit more washing soda. ?

In reply to Micaela. They're volatile oils, not water based or even quite the same as a carrier oil. I didn't have an issue with them turning the powder hard for me, but you could leave them out and see if that helps. If the powder is exposed to moisture in the air and not kept in an airtight container and your home is more humid, that could effect it too.

I live in the PNW and have soft water. This recipe is FANTASTIC!! Also, I couldn’t find my Washing Soda, so I just used Baking Soda. Worked great! EVEN my husband, who eschews my “homemade” solutions said, “This works better than the normal stuff”. I used this recipe because we ran out at night, went to the store, and all they had were pods, which I DO NOT want to use. Thank you pod manufacturers, now I have a GREAT solution that is SO MUCH cheaper and doesn’t have plastic associated with it.

I tried this because you said it worked so well. I even put my dishwasher setting on heavy and extra boost and my dishes certainly did not come out clean. Everyone of my glasses had a white film that looked like they were rinsed in milk. I also have a 3 month old dishwasher. This recipe was horrible and will throw the rest of it away.

In reply to Alison. So I don’t like leaving negative reviews or comments, but borax is not safe to ingest. It can cause poisoning and organ damage. I just know it’s fairly easy for a dishwasher to not rinse off everything effectively every time. Is there a safer alternative to borax?

It really does work. We used to buy the most expensive dish tabs I can’t remember the name cuz it’s been so long since I bought it but it had the little red ball in the center of a white detergent Square. But we’ve saved so much money you should try it

In reply to Natalie. It may have gotten some moisture in it and already activated. It should be a powder still, not hardened.

The Bosch site says not to use sea salt and it can damage the appliances. Has anyone has issues? I can’t imagine it’s worse than the chemicals the detergents are made from.

I mixed this together in a glass jar where I intended to keep it but it just got super hard and impossible to spoon out??
