Coconut oil is solid at room temperature and is what makes this a lotion instead of a liquid. You could try using olive oil mixed with melted beeswax to make a more solid oil similar to coconut oil.

I have been making Katie’s lotions for years. Usually half shea butter/1/3 mango or cocoa butter, and 1/3 coconut oil. About 1/4 cup of oil and lavender. Melt it all down, whip it for at least 10 minites, put it in the frig for at least an hour, and then do the same thing 2 or 3 times. It makes it smoother. I have not used the bee stuff. I will have to try it. Thanks for all the good recipes.

Can I replace that with good quality olive oil?

I think the name “lotion” is misleading here in this case. A lotion always contains a water phase, while this one is an anhydrous product. It could also be that the beeswax amount is too high. In addition it is a good idea to weight everything.

Well, it’s because it is not a lotion but rather a balm. A lotion always contains a water phase, while this one is an anhydrous product. It could also be that the beeswax amount is too high. In addition it is a good idea to weight everything.

However, I am certain there is some kind of mistake with the beeswax quantity. I had a doubt but made it anyway and, well, it is more a balm rather than lotion.

Shea butter can turn grainy if it isn’t cooled quickly enough. Usually cooling the lotion in the fridge instead of at room temperature fixes the issue.

I’ve made quite a few of your lotions in the Spa Basket! Love them and love you. What am I doing wrong when the lotions are smooth at first but after a few day feel like there are little pellets in them?

It does not need stored in the refrigerated as there is no water in it. You can put it in the fridge until cool and then whip it if you prefer a lighter consistency though.

If you put it in the fridge until it’s colder you can whip it with the whisk attachment on a stand mixer. This will make it a little fluffier. This isn’t a traditional lotion which is an emulsion between water and oil, so it doesn’t have the same feel. It’s a little more like a body butter. Here’s a recipe that’s more like the typical lotion if you want to make something like that and you can use whatever skin safe essential oils you prefer. https://wellnessmama.com/beauty/mens-lotion-recipe/

Mine came out the same way, oily, but it is hardening. It’s more like a melted candle wax. Can you use anything to whip it or is this what it is? It’s not a lotion consistency as I thought it was going to be.

It should solidify once it cools if you added enough beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter. If not you may have used too much almond oil. Did you use virgin coconut oil that’s solid at room temperature or fractionated liquid coconut oil?

I have it on the refrigerator now, seeing if I can get it to solidify at all.

What did I do wrong?

You can replace the shea butter with mango butter (an astringent butter), however the coconut oil is necessary for consistency and it does have a greasier feel. This recipe absorbs faster and you can scent it with any skin-friendly essential oils you want. https://wellnessmama.com/beauty/mens-lotion-recipe/

Thank you for all the info! I just made it yesterday and followed your recipe except I used a combination of peppermint, lemongrass, tea tree and cedarwood essential oils but it feels greasy? What could I adjust to make it less greasy?

I love love love this lotion. My man loves it more. It’s great for scars, dry skin, regular skin, chapped skin, feet, everything. It is not greasy, soaks in quickly, and is very nourishing. Best part is that I know exactly what is in it. Thank you for sharing this!

How long will the lotion last if stored properly?

Not sure what I did wrong…

The recipe calls for regular coconut oil, but it can get very hard at colder temperatures. If it’s that hard it might help to cut the beeswax in half, at least during the colder months.
