Castor oil is much stickier and isn’t solid at room temperature like coconut oil. You could replace a small amount of the coconut oil with castor oil but it might have more of a lip gloss feel.

Can I use castor oil instead of coconut oil? If yes, how much?

Thanks !

You could try replacing it with 1 TBSP of another liquid oil and 1 TBSP of beeswax or cocoa butter.

Grapefruit is phototoxic and can cause blisters and burns if used before sun exposure.

If you used 1 heaping tablespoon of zinc oxide powder in this recipe it would be about 20 spf and the ratio would be similar to Katie’s homemade sunscreen recipe. It might turn your lips white though!

I’m excited to try this recipe. I’ve made other DIY’s from you and they are wonderful! My question is – I want to add some zinc so it will have some SPF. How much would you add to this recipe?
Thanks so much!

A vanilla extract made with glycerin instead of alcohol would work.

I worry that using vanilla extract will be drying since most are made with alcohol. Thoughts on that and/or recommendations for a natural vanilla flavor?

You could try replacing the coconut oil with 1 TBSP of a liquid carrier oil (like olive oil) and 1 TBSP of cocoa butter.

Does this ever end up full of white bumps on the surface? I can’t seem to make it without them showing up… what am I doing wrong??

I want to make a lip balm stick that also has some sun protection to it. What changes to this recipe would you recommend? I would also like to add beetroot powder to it so I can use it as lipstick. Will that work?

Thanks

Honey is water soluble. The other ingredients are all oil based. We all know oil and water don’t mix. You can find very good honey flavoring essence and honey fragrance oils that work really well instead.

Yes, interested in making one with sunscreen too. Would adding essential oils that have a natural sunblock work? Carrotseed has natural spf, correct?
