Our family likes feta cheese with these Greek meatball skewers and in this strawberry salad (my favorite!). But I’ve never had feta by itself before. This baked feta recipe is inspired by my trip to Greece and is perfect to use as a dip or throw in a stir fry.
Baked Feta with Olive Oil
In 2021 I was able to make a trip to Greece and while the Mediterranean views were amazing, the food was even better! Feta is a staple there and you can find it served in everything, but they also serve it alone. It was the first time I’d had feta grilled or baked and it was delicious! The Greeks also put oregano on everything and a whole bag of dried oregano was only two Euro.
Just a tip: I prefer to use sheep’s milk feta instead of cow’s milk because it’s creamier. You might be able to find it in the specialty cheese section at your local grocery store. But if not, then regular cow’s milk feta will still work.
Baked Feta Options
I kept this baked feta recipe simple so the flavor of the cheese can really shine through. If you want to though you could add some extra ingredients for a slightly different taste. Garnish the baked feta with some red pepper flakes or black pepper if desired for a bit more of a kick. You can also add some fresh basil or fresh thyme in with the oregano. Fresh herbs are always a win in my book. Along with the tomatoes you could also add in some red onion or a few cloves of garlic.
How to Eat Greek Feta
While this baked feta cheese makes for an easy appetizer, it’s also yummy with other dishes. Crumble it on top of zucchini for a side dish. Or you can throw it in a Greek salad with some kalamata olives and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.
A lot of recipes call for serving this with crusty bread or a baguette, but it’s just as delicious with grain-free and gluten-free options. Sliced cucumbers make great veggie chips or sometimes we’ll eat it with grain-free crackers.
You can even turn the leftovers into some baked feta pasta. Some gluten-free pasta with the feta crumbled into it, basil leaves, and some sauce would be delicious. We also like putting it in with some veggies and eggs for a morning breakfast scramble.
However you decide to eat it, this baked feta is simple, easy and a family favorite!
