Castor Oil for Thicker and Longer Hair

I’ve been experimenting a lot with castor oil lately as a natural beauty remedy. I already use it in my oil cleansing blend each day, and I’m enjoying the results from using castor oil packs on my skin.

Years ago, a friend mentioned that she loved castor oil for hair and eyelashes. I was really skeptical because castor oil has a very thick and sticky consistency that I couldn’t imagine using in hair. I did some research and found out that I had been seriously missing out on a simple and really effective traditional beauty remedy…

Benefits of Castor Oil for Hair and Skin

Castor oil is an age-old beauty treatment that has been largely replaced over time by fancier beauty products with more ingredients and a bigger price tag.

Castor oil has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties and is high in vitamin E, minerals, proteins, and omega-6 and -9 beneficial fatty acids. Its unusually high ricinoleic acid ratio makes it beneficial to skin and hair.

In fact, castor oil has traditionally been used topically for acne and other skin conditions, as well as hair loss, rashes, and more. If you want to try it for skincare, I recommend this handcrafted castor oil.

What Does Castor Oil Do for the Hair?

Castor oil can be used on the scalp to help prevent and remedy hair loss and it is effective at this for several reasons. Its antibacterial and antifungal properties make it beneficial against follliculitus, dandruff, and scalp infections and its ricinoleic acid content helps increase circulation to the scalp and improve hair growth.

Ricinoleic acid is also said to help balance scalp pH which can also help replenish the scalp’s natural oils and undo some of the damage of harsh chemical hair products (and even damage from no-poo, due to over alkalinity). The antioxidants in castor oil also support the keratin in hair and help make hair stronger, smoother, and less frizzy.

“Three Times the Growth!”

How to do a castor oil treatment for natural hair and eyelash growth- simple natural remedy

There are hundreds of testimonials from people who used castor oil to increase their hair growth 3-5 times the normal rate. A friend of mine was struggling with postpartum hair loss and even once her hair loss slowed, regrowing her hair was difficult.

She measured her hair growth for a month and it grew almost half an inch. The next month, after using castor oil hair treatments twice a week, her hair had grown almost 2 inches. She tested this again the following month and noticed the same result and that her hair was dramatically thicker.

What Type of Castor Oil for Hair?

There are several options for castor oil hair treatments. I prefer to make my own.

To make my own, I mix castor oil with another hair-healthy oil (options listed below) and herbs to help support scalp health. Unrefined and cold-pressed hexane-free castor oil is preferred.

Castor oil is extremely thick and viscous so I prefer to mix with jojoba or argan oil in a glass dropper bottle for easy application.

Jamaican Black Castor Oil

There is a special type of castor oil called Jamaican black castor oil that has extremely good reviews. I tried it as well and it seemed to work about the same as regular castor oil on my hair, but it seems that it might provide additional benefit for those with thick or dry hair (my hair is fine/oily).

How to Use Castor Oil Treatments on Hair

Castor oil can be very beneficial for hair growth if used correctly. Small amounts of plain oil can be used for an all-over treatment. Like many things in life, more is not always better, and only a few drops are needed per treatment. The additional oils are completely optional.

How Often

I personally use this castor oil 1-2 times per week. It can be used more often, though I didn’t see any increased results with using it daily.

When to Use

I’ve found that this treatment works better on damp but not wet hair. I keep a spray bottle of water in the bathroom and just spritz my roots before applying.

How to use castor oil for thicker and longer hair naturally

For maximum benefit, I leave the treatment on for several hours or overnight. After applying, I use a shower cap or towel to avoid getting the oil on furniture or a pillow.

How to Remove the Oil

Removing the castor oil can be difficult, especially with natural shampoos. I’ve found that using a small amount and leaving it on overnight will result in most of the oil absorbing into the hair and scalp and make cleanup easier. In fact, I’ve been able to use dry shampoo and not wash on a few occasions. When I do shampoo, I use a natural shampoo or mud shampoo as normal.

An alternate way is to crack an egg and whisk until smooth and then massage the egg into the scalp. This helps break down the oil and adds additional nutrients to the hair. It is messy though, so I’d recommend doing this in the shower.

Another less-messy way is to condition your hair before getting in the shower, massaging conditioner into the scalp to help remove the castor oil. Then, shampoo as usual.

Important Notes:

With any new oil, herb, or product, test a tiny amount on your inner arm to make sure you don’t have a reaction. While reactions are rare, some people will notice irritation from castor oil.

I’ve also used this in combination with my hair growth serum with great results. (I use the serum first to dampen hair, then apply the castor oil.)

It is also important to support the body nutritionally and hormonally with hair loss, as this can often be a sign of an internal problem.

BONUS TIP: I rub a tiny amount of castor oil on my eyelids at night to help eyelash growth as well. It is also part of my eyelash growth serum recipe.

Castor Oil Hair Serum Recipe

A mix of castor oil and jojoba will make a hair serum to help your hair grow faster, stronger, and smoother.

Materials

Instructions

  • Combine the ingredients in a dark-colored dropper bottle.
  • Shake to mix.
  • Use the dropper to apply to the scalp. I part my hair right above the ear on one side, add a few drops of castor oil, part again about ½ inch from that part, add more castor oil, and so on until I’ve coated my whole scalp.
  • Then, I massage for 5 minutes to make sure entire scalp is coated and to help increase circulation.

Notes

This will make enough for 5+ uses depending on the length of your hair.
If you’re not a fan of using castor oil, some people have found coconut oil for hair to be a better fit.
For best hair health, I recommed using the above with Wellnesse Shampoo and Conditioner (from yours truly!), which I formulated to meet all of my criteria for safe, non-toxic, and naturally nourishing hair care.

My Own Results with Castor Oil…

Last year, when I was under extreme stress for a short period of time (finishing my book *ahem*), I noticed increased hair loss. My Hashimoto’s makes me more susceptible to hair loss when I’m under stress, and I was stressed about my hair loss (vicious cycle).

To combat this, I experimented with natural castor oil treatments both alone and mixed with other oils. I too noticed that my hair seemed stronger and that there was definitely less hair in my brush each day after a few weeks of castor oil treatments. Additionally, I started seeing tiny new hairs all around my hair line.

Random observation:

I split my head open when I was younger, requiring 8 staples in my scalp. Where the scar is, I have a patch of super-curly hair that falls in a perfect ringlet, even though the rest of my hair is wavy/straight. The castor oil seemed to help make this hair patch smoother, though it grew at a faster rate than the rest of my hair.

Now, I’ve made these castor oil hair treatments a regular part of my weekly routine and often do them at night, while wearing my blue blocker glasses and reading or watching a movie with my hubby.

Thanks Katie! I can’t wait to try this. Is there a certain brand of jojoba and coconut oil that you recommend?

  2. April Avatar

Hello~I am wondering if you just massage this into your scalp or if you also apply it to your ends. I’m not really having hair loss- but rather hair breakage around my face. Im thinking it’s from taking DHEA for a few months. I had read that DHEA can cause hair breakage, thanks in advance for your answer about the application 🙂

  3. Elizabeth Avatar

I have been using castor oil on my eyelashes at night and definitely notice a difference. I just apply a small amount with a q tip.

  4. Dove Avatar

Would you recommend this for a child? My 3.5 year old daughter has rather thin hair, frizzy due to our very dry air, and it grows very slowly. (I’ve nver cut it and it’s only an inch past her shoulders, if that). I’d love for her to have long, thick hair (like mine, so I can’t figure where she gets her thin hair from!)

    1. Stacy Avatar

Much of hair growth is genetic. It’s kind of how some people are predisposed to low muscle tone bodies and others can gain or maintain muscle easily. You can find healthy habits to support your goal, but I wouldn’t expect someone who struggles with thin hair to become a Garnier girl — even with good habits. Castor oil is great for scalp dandruff. If your air is dry and she has scalp issues, this may be of help to her.

I have medium thick hair with a few spots that are sensitive to thinning. My mother and two of my sisters have locks thick as you’d ever dream.

    2. Lily Avatar

Not sure how willing you would be to do this, but, my kids (twins) had VERY fine hair up until age 2.5 yrs. My son had hardly any hair actually. I was so distressed that he looked bald all the time, even other people commented on his lack of hair. What i ended up doing was what my mum did to me when i was around 3 – i shaved their hair off, twice. It wasnt really an issue even for my daughter, as she’s very confident anyway, but i have to say, it absolutely worked. Their hair is soooo thick now, esp my son’s. It’s beautiful. I look at it now in wonder and think of all the times i stressed because it was super fine and wispy. Its an old ethnic tale, but ive always been told that, if a young child has fine hair, shave it off (buzz cut), and it will grow back thicker (like it does when you start shaving your legs).

      1. Gerry Avatar

It’s actually impossible for hair to grow back thicker from shaving. It’s a myth. The number of follicles you have is set at birth. What happens when you shave is you cut the hair in the middle of the shaft, where it’s thickest. Therefore when it grows, it appears thicker.

      2. Antony Avatar

“(like it does when you start shaving your legs).” aka nothing, if that’s the equivalence, thanks ;).

    3. Marie Avatar

My husband and I both had no hair as children it took us a long time to grow it but his hair is sooo thick and curly and mine has always been very long. Thinner now but it grows well and is probably 4 inches from reaching my rear.. So dont despair 😉

  5. Naomi Avatar

Just to clarify- you are putting it on your scalp only not necessarily coating all of your hair down to the tips?

  6. Kelsey Avatar

This is very helpful! Question… I’ve heard that you should never use coconut oil in your hair if you don’t use a commercial grade shampoo. Is that true? Because I have very oily hair and I use your homemade coconut milk/castile soap shampoo and I’m afraid it won’t be tough enough to remove extra oils. You use the branch basics cleaner in your hair as well? Thanks so much!!

    1. Bella Avatar

Coconut oil is the only oil with molecules small enough to actually be absorbed by your hair. Studies have proven the hair actually absorbs virgin coconut oil. So no, that is not true. It can be removed quite easily without a commercial shampoo, and it absorbs readily into skin and hair. This, coming from a user of coconut oil in hair for over 10 years. It is edible so it is non-comedogenic and non-toxic. It won’t clog the pores on your scalp.

      1. marge Avatar

will the coconut oil return back to it original stage after it cool off and mixing with the Castrol or shall I only use coconut oil alone and not mix it any other oil

  7. Laura Avatar

This is great! Just wondering if jojoba oil will stain blonde hair? Also, can this be used on ends too? I know hair grows from the root, but I find I get a lot of end breakage too which doesn’t help.

    1. lola Avatar

I read about castor oil on eyebrows and eyelashes, so every night i put a drop of oil on tip- of index finger rub together with the other and first i go over my eyebrows then with the rest i rub my eyelids getting it all over my eyelashes. I have gotten tremendous results! its pretty amazing because eyelashes had gotten so thin because of age and i kid you not now they look like when i was 20 years old again! It really does work. Now i will try adding the rosemary oil for better results. I cant even imagine what they’ll look like if i add the rosemary oil. 🙂

  8. Isavella Avatar

I haven’t used castor oil in my hair but have had great success with eyelashes! Just massage a bit into the roots (from the top) and then use whatever is left on your finger to sweep it through the length from the underside. It really works.

Also, if you’re experiencing hair loss I HIGHLY recommend a boar bristle brush. I really want a Mason Pearson but it’s a lot of moola. There is a Sonia Kashuk knockoff at Target that is around $15 and it has drastically reduced my hair loss in a couple of months. I am talking my hair is at least 50% thicker. Hope this helps 🙂

    1. Annie Avatar

What was your technique for using the brush to help with hair loss? (some people say lean over and brush hair from back to front….)

      1. Vera Avatar

Whatever you do start brushing your hair from the ends and work up, this way you can get any knots out without ripping strands whole strands.

      1. peace Avatar

Is it any castor oil bcos dey sell at d drugs centre is it d one dat stimulate labor or there is a special one for it

        1. Bella Avatar

That’s the same castor oil she is referring to. There is no such thing as “food grade” or “medical grade” castor oil. It is all the same unless it has added oils like rosemary, which some are sold that way. Pure, cold pressed, hexane-free castor oil can be consumed to start labor, and it is used for skin and hair care.

Hi Katie, thank you for all your recommendations. I have all made all your baby recipes. I have a newborn and she was born with very thin hair. Have you tried castor oil on a newborn baby? I was thinking of trying it on my daughter but a small patch. Would you recommend that?

      1. Jamie Larrison Avatar

Castor oil by itself is very thick and sticky and works better on hair if it’s mixed with another carrier oil. Usually baby’s hair will eventually grow/thicken on its own!

  10. Theresa Avatar

    Hi Katie

Love, love your work! Really want to try the castor oil treatments and currently use it on my lashes at night with great success, but have read on several blogs that it has darkened people’s hair – especially eyebrows. I have very similar hair to yours in texture and colour (natural blonde) and am growing out previous highlights, so the roots appear darker because of the contrast, especially on days between hair washings. I am using your natural hair lightening tips to brighten it up so the last thing I want is for castor oil to darken the roots. Have you experienced any darkening since you started the castor oil treatments? Your hair is really great; do you have any artificial/chemical colour in your hair, or are the blonde tones all from your natural hair lightening recipes and the sun?

The castor oil did darken my eyebrows…I’m normally a number 4 (light to medium brown) but my eyebrows look black now. That’s okay with me, as my hair is dyed jet black, but it could also be due to the fact that I used Jamaican Black Castor oil (JBCO);on my eyebrows and not regular clear castor oil. I have both but I tend to use JBCO more often, as it is more potent.

So yes, the hair darkening can occur with JBCO, but I am not sure whether clear castor oil causes it.

how long did it take for your eyebrows to grow back & how did you apply it? i usually do it after i shower and just take a q-tip or a mascara wand that hasn’t been used (a trial one from sephora) and go back and forth and in circles on my eyebrows with the serum until i think I’ve rubbed it in enough.. is that what you do? and what is the name of the black jamican castor oil you use? i know theres like 50 different kinds out there and i don’t want to buy one that has a whole bunch of chemicals in it and isn’t the real one. TIA

I’ve enjoyed reading everything you have to say about this oil and look forward to trying it – question how do you apply it to eyelashes ?

Perhaps as oil applied to take off mascara at night. Just rub it in and leave.

very nice blog!! for hair treatment i have know about minoxidil solution but thanks for giving such nice information about caster oil.

    1. Bella Avatar

The problem with minoxidil is you must use it indefintely…a rebound effect can occur, which means when you stop using it, your hair loss will return or even increase. Castor oil does not cause this. I use it on my scalp for shedding, my eyebrows, my lashes, eczema, and even applied the Jamaican Black Castor Oil to my newborn’s cradle cap (plus I wanted his hair to grow in thicker and darker). It cured the cradle cap and grew his hair. It made my sparse eyebrows and lashes grow much faster, thicker, and the hairs are darker.

As for my scalp, it definitely grows hair. I had postpartum shedding but castor oil mixed with a variety of essential oils, like lavender, oregano, thyme, neroli, juniper berry, peppermint, tea tree, and rosemary most certainly increase growth and scalp health. I never have any problem with shedding since using these oils…I lose maybe 30 hairs a day now and I used to have a comb full of shed hair.

And also they have an invigorating hair oil that is supposed to be good for hair growth. Have you tried this? I’m curious of the ingredients but they seem to not want to tell me them in the emails Ive sent them.

    1. Robin Avatar

I’ve heard to look for words like “Hexane Free, Extra Virgin, Cold Pressed” . Those mean it’s messed with less and is left in its natural state.

I use a mix of castor oil, coconut oil (warmed/melted) & several drops of rosemary essential oil. This blend helps a lot with my thinning, dry, chemically treated hair. It’s also good in treating some dandruff on some parts of my scalp. I never really have a problem washing off the oils from my hair. Not sure if it’s because I use the Jason brand biotin shampoo.

I started to use it on both my eyelashes and hair, all I can say is it works, try it and see. I found Castor OIL in my local Indian grocer shop, so buy it when I go to buy my Indian spices. It sounds like u have alopecia areata. It a autoimmune disease.. Ive had it twice . along with other symptoms like joint pain, lactose intolerance . I went to a derm and the give u cortisone shots to the bald spot , the first time it worked in 4 weeks it had regrown.. Y=The second time 4 years later it didn’t work after 3 shots. So I tried gluten free. With in 1 week I felt better, by 1 month i had hair regrowing. My joint pain is gone. Im 32 I shouldn’t have any of these systems. Look up celiacs disease, and why gluten is bad for all of us. It changed my life.

I have alopecia areata also, the derm said it was likely ” autoimmune” after 2 sets of cortisone injections, I have some regrow th, but there are still bald spots around it. I’m paleo for over a year and in the last 2 months on the autoimmune protocol, still have bald spots, wondering what is going on…my diet is lacking all allergens, stress is the same. Sleep I cannot improve, I’ve tried it all- I will medicate 10 minutes nightly now with my new app.

One day when a motion sensor light lit me up, my eyelashes were crazy shiny! I hadn’t put it on in a few days, so it wasn’t residual. While I haven’t noticed significant hair growth, healthy hair will look better than what I had before. Quality over quantity, until the quantity is a little higher. 😉

        2. Paula Avatar

Yes I’ve always done this with mascaras!! The lavender gives a really nice consistency & perfume. And definitely my eyelashes have improved. So simple….

I’ve noticed an improvement in my lashes and have only used it a few times. I should be consistent! Actually, I was using the castor oil for dry eye as I’ve read it’s good for that. Again, I need to consistently use this. Like dry brushing, I keep forgetting to use castor oil on my eyes–for dry eye AND lashes! For hair, I already have the other two ingredients. Thanks, Katie for this recipe and article. Definitely sharing!

I have Castro oil but i went to the store and bought coconut that you have to melt from the cooking oil section will that work and if so how much do i mix

    3. Carrie Avatar

Yes! Works awesome for eyelashes! I have lashes even on the bottom lid that were never there before. I’m experimenting with my hair now. Hope to stop and/or reverse my hairloss.

      1. Marie Avatar

Carrie, I don’t know when you pisted this about using castor oil on eyelashes but is it still helping them grow? How long did it take to see a difference? Also, are you seeing a difference in the bald spot on your head? That is my issue, and I wonder if this really works.

        1. Mandy Avatar

I just did 5 months of chemo & one month of radiation. Lost all hair & eye lashes. Literally after I was done with treatment I started using caster oil for both my hair & eyelashes. MY EYELASHES GREW BACK WITHIN 3 weeks and sooo much better & fuller than I have ever had them in my life. My hair is growing back faster than the average chemo patients hair, not the strangely yucky waiting for normal hair strands. Short hair still after two months, but def made a difference for what was expected, it’s looking healthy. It’s coming back really pretty, soft & strong. My docs are amazed as they haven’t seen this in any of their patients. I am positive it’s due to the castor oil. I use it every night on my eye lashes, scalp & around my eyes. It also has helped the dark circles and bags under my eyes dramatically. I don’t care if it’s greeesy or oily, it works! Easy to wash off the next day with a simple shower with soap or whatever. I recommend it to anyone. I’ve always wanted thick ,long, pretty eyelashes, I have them now..& I know my hair is on its way to the same mend.

Definitely better than taking it internally. 😀 That is my only experience with it – trying to start labour. (Don’t do it!)

    1. Stacy Avatar

My sister uses it to start labor, also. It seems to work well for her, especially considering she goes about 2 weeks past her due date normally!

      1. Alisha Avatar

I was three weeks past due and that is what my father gave my mother. She almost didn’t make it until the dr got there. lol

I drank this oil as well with my last two children… worked like a charm! With my last child, I had only 30 minute labor with an emergency at home delivery by the husband it was amazing!! 🙂

          3. Shirley Avatar

I tried to mix some with some juice before I went into labor after I actually got about 2 tablespoons down without throwing up didn’t work with the Juice it just separate so I just put it in the tablespoon and did my best to get two or 3 tablespoons down can’t remember my child now is 45 years old it was amazing it did work my labor was very short at the hospital maybe 3 1/2 hours

I too drank it with my last two children! It worked! With my daughter I drank it the night before, and the next morning went into a 3 hour labor, and with my son I drank the oil and within hours went into labor, 30 minutes total- he ended up being a home birth! 🙂

Please tell me about castor oil? he is better for hair broken and growth?

          1. Sunni Avatar

Yes! It’s great for breakage & growth, I apply it twice a week as an overnight pre-treatment blended with a penetrating oil like avocado, olive or coconut oil.

          2. Mestawot Avatar

my daughter is 15 months is castor oil recommend for growing hair for my child

          3. Tracy Avatar

Mestawot, she might be low in iodine. Try Lugal’s. A couple drops a week in juice or rub into the skin. The oil would not hurt her hair but how will she react? If it was my children, they would keep touching it and make a huge mess.

        3. MARY Avatar

Using castor oil to speed up labor…I believe it! The way that stuff tastes it will make anything in u come out! lol..when i was a child, my Mom used to give it to me when I was sick and I was better like almost immediately.

Mamas and Grandmas the best. I have super fine hair, and very long and lovely, so I was sceptical about slathering on thick casto oil. I made a mix of castor and olive oil, 3 to 1, and applied it it scalp through eye dropper after I misted roots with nettle water infusion. Then at end, through trial and error from before, I whisked up an egg yolk with a tbsp of fat freed organic yogurt and slathered on my hair before I began the shampoo and rinse. The oil came out so fast ! Too fast in fact. Next time only leave on for a split second before I rinse

Hello Wellsmama! I just started to use Jamaican Black Castor Oil two days ago. I have a question, I have the Mirena IUD for 1 year and 2 months. I have heard many bad opinions on this anticonceptive. Do you think that is causing me hair loss? If so, will the Jamaican Black Castor Oil works for me? Or would do you recommend me to remove Mirena because of the hormonal changes? And after removal, can I continue with the JBCO? I hope you can answer to my question because I’m kind of desperate. Thank you!!

          1. Sue Avatar

I have used the Mirena iud for almost 10 years now…I don’t believe it is making your hair fall out. At least it never had that effect on me. I have never had a moment of problems with mine. Be careful when you hear “horror stories” about it…many tend to be slightly exaggerated.
You could however experience some hair loss after having a child. Not sure where you are with that
In any case…hope things work out for you. It won’t hurt to try it.:-)

I had a mirena and started to have many problems only 6 months after insertion. I suffered with a stroke caused from anxiety that started after having that. I am a very happy go lucky, outgoing person who has never in my life been nervous about anything. A year later after my first stroke, My anxiety got even worse, started with heart palpitations (getting up to 205bpm) and had yet another stroke. In that time I’ve seen my female doctor to get it out and she reassured me that the mirena is only progesterone and would not cause these issues. It was safe. I spent a great deal in doctors offices to get down to the bottom of what was causing me to have these issues at only 29 years old. I went to Neurologist, heart specialist, and my female doctor. All said the same thing about mirena and that I should not get it removed. 2 weeks later. I had my 3rd stroke which was the worst stroke. I lost all control of my body. Couldn’t talk, walk, speak, and couldn’t even think. Brought me to the ER which I was surrounded by a team of doctors and nurses. Had lots of blood drawn, xrays, mrI, and many other test. Doctors couldn’t believe that someone like me with perfect vitals, blood work, and overall health was having strokes. They did find that I had a hole in my heart so I had a surgery to have that corrected. While thinking that was the problem, I kept the iud in. Lo and behold, Still having severe anxiety, heart palpatations up to 200 bpm, and mood swing out of this world. I finally stopped listening to all these doctors telling me that it wasn’t this iud device causing me problems and got the iud out. I am going on a year after getting it out and I could not be happier. Haven’t had anymore problems with anxiety, heart palpitations, or mood swings. I’m finally back to my old self again. I would get the IUD out immediately if I were you. Maybe you would never have any issues, but after looking my issues up with the iud, looks like there are many other ladies just like myself that have had the same problems.

          3. Sha Avatar

I had the Mirena iud in for 2 months and experienced major hair loss/shedding. I begged my doctor to remove it because the anxiety of seeing my hair falling out everyday was too stressful. It has now been 8 months since the removal and I still experience shedding but not as much as before while on the IUD. I don’t even really have a full ponytail anymore. I would never take that as birth control again.

          4. Ryan Avatar

Late on this convo but go see a doctor to check you for anemia and also see where your IUD is. My IUD was imbedded and caused severe hair loss and anemia. I only wish I found it sooner. I almost needed a blood transfusion or whatever they call it when you need iron in your blood beyond supplements. It was awful.

          5. Victoria Avatar

Ryan, which IUD did you have? Mirena or Paraguard? I just had the Paraguard (copper/hormone free) put it and before they did it, they checked my iron. It was a little low so they told me to take an iron supplement for a while and they would check everything again in 6 weeks. I hope I do not have any problems! It does sound awful what you went through!

          6. Lita Avatar

I believe my Mirena IUD made my hair super thin! I’m going to try the caster oil with hopes that it helps. I’ve had it removed for 3 years and still my hair is so thin. Good luck.

it will work on your beard. Put some in your palm and work all through your beard. keep it in overnight and wash it out in the morning. Start off two times a week. you should see a fuller and softer beard.

I’ve purchased all of ingredients for the Hair Serum and hair loss Oil Repair. Branch Basics can’t fill my order for the product you suggested for washing the oil out before shampooing. I don’t want to put the oil in my hair if I can’t get it out. Any suggestions of another product that might work? Please help — I want to get started on this before I’m bald!!!

      1. Wellness Mama Avatar

Any regular shampoo for oily hair will take it out, it just won’t be entirely natural. Also, I’ve found that if I just use a small amount of the oil at night and let it absorb while I sleep, it isn’t hard to get out with a regular shampoo.

        Hi Sheila,

I too am waiting for Branch Basics to come back into stock. I have been using clay to wash my hair for the past year, but occasionally I use Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak when I feel like my scalp needs it. I don’t think my scalp has fully transitioned to natural hair care…though it’s MUCH better than it was the first few months when I started two years ago. Since I didn’t have the Branch Basics, I used the NYM Clean Freak and then my clay shampoo mixture. Overall, I think it cut through the oil well enough. I also rinsed with a small amount of ACV mixed with water (my typical conditioner). Hope that helps!

      3. Cindy Avatar

The beaten egg works like a charm for me, and that’s with way more oil than was really needed.

      4. Anita Avatar

Here is a tried and true suggestion that has always worked for me over 50 years: Apply shampoo to hair BEFORE adding water and massage it in. The cleanser molecules attach better to the EXCESS oil molecules when used prior to adding water to break them down and then the water can rinse them out. This will not remove the ‘absorbed’ oil in hair and scalp that you are working to achieve with this treatment.

I whisked up one egg yolk with 1 tbsp of organic fat free yoghurt, then massaged that into scalp. Left on 30 seconds then rinsed out. Then I shampooed and conditioned and all was perfect.

        2. Wendy Avatar

This s what I was taught at hairdressing college years ago-it’s the recommended fail-safe way to do it.-smother the hair in any shampoo while still dry or slightly damp then add the water & proceed as normal

That’s also my only experience with castor oil. Have not touched it (or the ruby red grapefruit juice I drank after the castor oil) since. That was 22 years ago. Maybe I’m ready to try it externally for my hair. 🙂

Castor oil taste disgusting. It’s not poison. Castor was given to kid’s year’s ago for when you get a cold it’s a laxative

      2. meg Avatar

Castor beans are poisonous, but not castor oil. Not sure what they use to make it safe but until the recent generations mothers gave castor oil to their kids on a reguar basis.

It’s not poisonous.what is poisonous is the castor leaf if taken in.but to be sincere its smell is going to irritate when swallowed and as such can cause vomiting.besides it has side effects that manifest differently on different people but not deadly side effects as long as u stick to the Castor oil not the plant itself
