I tried a olive oil once because i was out of coconut and it is great for oil cleansing my face and had heard it was good for hair, big mistake for me as it made my hair kinda crunchy. Just goes to show how everyone is different. Thank you for your posts!

It is only when I stopped using it and a homemade herbal shampoo, and started using shop bought conditioners and shampoos that I have started losing hair by the handful. It also depends on the nutritional care of your body and eating proteins, vegetables and fruits etc. and having your meals at proper intervals. Taking walks in the fresh air too contributes greatly to hair and physical health. Just my experience.

When I was about 24 I started using Hain coconut oil on my hair and skin. It dried my skin out and dried my hair out very badly. There was a book called “herbs and things ” by Bay area herbalist Jeanne rose Who listed different oils explaining some r drying to the skin and hair while others like Castor oil as you mentioned in your article are beneficial. The drying ones are sesame, coconut and safflower. Beneficial oils are olive, avocado, and almond. This is only regarding topical use not internal. I feel frustrated about The trend everyone using coconut oil now. over time we will find that this is damaging to most skin types. I learned the hard way, 50 years ago. Now I use jojoba oil on hair, now thin, gray, dry. Henna also dried out my hair. Peroxide damaging too. Thank you for that great article

I don’t think I had breakage but definite shedding from the root. Then I got scared reading some Reddit threads about coconut oils actually causing more hair loss like you said. I ended up getting recommended a hair loss vitamin from Baby Blues. It was created for postpartum moms to help with hair shedding and weak hair after delivery. It has been extremely beneficial for me. Since someone shared with me, I try to pass it on. I appreciate your article showing both sides of using the coconut oil though, as it isn’t for everyone.

It is basically my hair gel. I have naturally curly hair and need something to control the craziness and coconut oil is my favorite thing for it! I’ve been doing this for several years now and haven’t had a problem with if. My hair seems much healthier than before I was doing this. I don’t use a lot and I don’t put it on my scalp.

For sores on the scalp:

A 1/2 cider vinegar/ 1/2 water rinse after shampooing is a big aid to soothing and healing them.

Coconut oil: seems to depend on the type of hair one has and the type of scalp problem. My hair is fine and grey, significantly I suffer with Folliculitus. A little coconut oil; a scant 1/2 teaspoon added to my regular store bought conditioner and an equal dollop of aloe vera gel well blended together and worked into the scalp and any left over smoothed over the length of hair and left in 5 to 10 minutes has been a huge help in helping control the yeast infection.

I was told to melt the coconut, add to hair, wrap it with a warmed towel, leave over night and the only way to really take the oil from hair is to start working in the shampoo straight away without water as oil and water makes it really difficult. Then start adding water and shampoo and condition as normal.

When you say ‘Studies have even confirmed coconut oil’s benefits for certain types of hair, but it isn’t for everyone!’ can you advise which studies these were showing it isn’t for everyone?
I already have hair fall and IF coconut oil can cause hair fall then I wont use it – but I cannot find any peer reviewed studies showing this?

Thanks

I tried Spectrum organic extra virgin unrefined coconut oil and it was terrible on my hair. I thought coconut oil was just bad for my hair and avoided it for years. Then I tried Parachute coconut oil from India and it amazing on my hair. It even made my hands very soft while applying to my hair and that’s something Spectrum never did.
I also think it works better if you are not using a lot of synthetic products with it. I don’t think it “plays well” with many products.

Less of a risk to detangle with conditioner for me.

I have noticed it makes my hair shinier. Once I tried eggs and coconut oil mixed. ( my hair is long… so I used about 3 eggs.) It turned out extra shiny then.
